The festival is seeking artists to devise and deliver an ambitious engagement project to design a storytelling light trail with community participants. The theme of the trail is My Leicester – Future Stories

Job Description

Light Up Leicester is a festival of illumination and connectivity. Over four days it will light up the city centre with a trail of illuminated art installations and performances. Art Reach are recruiting up to ten primary schools and community groups in Leicester City to create a storytelling light trail to be displayed in business and shop windows across the city centre. The artist will be required to work in school and community settings to create a story thread with participants and realise a visual trail for festival audiences to follow.

Job Requirements

Commission applications will need to demonstrate:

  • A clear plan for the community participatory element, demonstrating a knowledge of working with primary schools and in other community settings
  • The finished artworks can be displayed in shop and business windows
  • The artworks are created by and with the community participants, with their stories at the project's heart, looking to Leicester's future
  • The artworks are connected in a way that forms a narrative and encourages audiences to follow the story trail
  • The artworks are of sufficient scale and impact to attract passers-by and members of the public who are not necessarily there to seek it out and artworks must incorporate light
  • All artworks will need to be suitable for family audiences and on display for the duration of the festival

Job Responsibilities

Light Up Leicester also invites artists to think about:

Placement

All artworks will be exhibited in the city centre. Art Reach will be securing the shop and business venues to display the pieces, the artist should consider how the pieces are ordered, and how audiences are guided along the trail.

Materials

Artists should think about the impact their work will have on the environment. Low energy artworks are encouraged, with reused and recycled materials preferred.

Fabrication processes should be thoroughly considered and detailed in the application.

Project delivery

Artists should consider how the engagement work will be delivered. In-person sessions, learning resource packs, online or digital delivery and other methods will be considered individually or in combination.
