Job Summary

Ginkgo Projects, on behalf of Avon Capital Estates, invites a sound-based artist to take part in a residency as part of the redevelopment of 40–46 Albert Road, Bristol.

Job Description

Located in the St Philip's Marsh area of the city, close to the River Avon and Temple Meads, this redevelopment will provide student accommodation and includes an enhanced public realm, including a publicly accessible riverside greenway.

The selected artist will work with sound to respond to the site and the surrounding area, using research and temporary installations/performance to design and develop a permanent piece of work for the site.

The Artist's Brief sets out the background of the development, followed by expectations of the residency and details of programme and budget.

Job Requirements

50 days: approx. 8 days per month over 6 months @ £300 per day

Phase 1

Concept design phase.

Around the 26th January to 26th February

Phase 2

Residency / research phase.

Around the 9th March to 10th September 2026

Phase 3

Detailed design, fabrication and installation of permanent work on site. It is expected that the building will be completed in May 2027.

Job Responsibilities

The artist will:

  • spend time immersing themselves in the location and surroundings of the development leading to the creation of work embedded within the development.
  • involve elements of co-creation & participatory activities will be part of the residency, ensuring deep engagement and ownership.
  • support skills development and capacity-building, with opportunities identified for activity and in partnership with local education, training and cultural providers.
  • bridge communities (local, cultural, students, wider Bristol) with enhanced, lively, authentic work.
  • produce high quality of work, in terms of both process and final artistic outputs.
  • create work that has relevance and specific to people & place. deliver a programme that has shared ownership and experience.
  • ensure that their work is delivered within budget and to agreed time-scales.
  • agree with the client with a maintenance plan and schedule for any permanent work in order to maintain the integrity of the artwork
