WMS (Wandsworth Mediation Service) is expanding its pool of workshop facilitators for school projects. Selected candidates will be contacted for interviews in May 2025.

Job Description

The role: WMS is looking for experienced and creative workshop facilitators to deliver peer mediation training to Year 5 primary school children and staff. The goal is to equip pupils with the skills to become mediators who help other children resolve playground conflicts independently. The programme is mostly games-based, and covers topics like emotional regulation, empathetic listening, assertiveness, teamwork, celebrating diversity and more. It is usually delivered to schools for free thanks to the funding that WMS seeks to cover costs of each project delivery.

Location: Predominantly SW London / South England (varies by project)
Job type: Project-based freelance self-employed contractor, projects are delivered during school days in term time, usually in the Autumn and Spring terms.
Contractor rate: ranges between £600 to £1500 per project, depending on grant funding.
Commitment: Projects are ad hoc and are dependent on (a) WMS receiving grant funding and (b) schools being willing to have the programme (c) agreeing dates with co-trainers and schools. Candidates must be able to commit to up to 3 projects per year and we would liaise with you over project dates in advance of each project.

Deadlines:
Applications close on 2 May 2025.
You will be informed by 8 May 2025 if you are selected for interview.
Interviews will take place in late May 2025, and we will ask you to prepare and deliver a game suitable to year 5 students.
You will be informed if you have been selected by 29 May 2025.
All trainers must attend two free (and unpaid) induction training sessions in June 2025 at St. Marks' Church, Battersea Rise, London SW11 1EJ.

Job Requirements

Person Specification - Essential:
At least 2 years' experience teaching or leading workshops for children and young people and/or higher-level qualification in working with young people (e.g. Youth Work, Cert Ed, PGCE).
Clear communicator with the ability to engage and inspire children and staff.
Classroom management: able to hold the attention of up to 30 children with a co-trainer, whilst supporting children with SEND in sometimes challenging circumstances.
Personal skills: Empathy, patience, calmness, creativity, positivity, high emotional intelligence and awareness of others, and ability to adapt based on the needs of children in the moment.
Organised and able to respond promptly to communication with schools and WMS.
Availability: Must have flexibility to work on a project basis, during school hours and in term time.

Person Specification - Desirable:
Experience delivering peer mediation training or training in conflict resolution.
Mediation training or experience.

Job Responsibilities

Key responsibilities:
Together with a co-facilitator, deliver engaging and interactive workshops for KS2 children and staff in primary schools, supported by WMS staff.
Use a variety of games, role plays and other activities to teach conflict resolution skills.
Liaise with WMS staff and school contacts to ensure all project outcomes are met.


Project schedule:
How each programme is delivered will depend on the primary school, but typically will entail:
1-hour introductory workshops for each Year 5 class: To introduce the programme and invite students to apply.
9-hour training for peer mediators (over 2-3 days): Typically delivered weekly, concluding with a 30-minute launch event to present the programme to the entire school.
1-hour staff training: For all teaching and support staff, covering the practical aspects of the scheme.
2-hour top-up session for peer mediators: Held a few months after the training to reflect on their practice and identify areas of improvement.
