Description

Job Description

Are you a designer who finds more inspiration in the curve of a fallen log than in a factory-milled plastic slide? We are looking for a Creative Designer who specialises in Natural Play, the art of using raw, sustainable materials to create immersive environments that connect children (and adults) back to the natural world. We need someone who views timber, stone, and earth not just as materials, but as the building blocks for adventure.

Why Join Us?

Work with the Grain: We avoid the catalogue approach. Every project is a unique response to a specific site.

Sustainable Impact: Join a team dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of the construction and play industry.

Legacy Projects: Help create heirloom-quality structures that will age gracefully and become a part of the local ecology.

This is a full-time position based at our Bristol workshop, driving licenseessential.

Salary £35k - £40k based on level of experience

Job Requirements

We need a designer with a "maker" mindset-someone who understands the soul of natural materials.

Mastery of Timber & Stone: Extensive knowledge of wood grain, decay resistance, and the structural properties of different natural materials.

Technical Construction Skills: Ability to produce technical joinery details that are both beautiful and safe, understanding how wood moves and weathers over time.

Tactile Creativity: A portfolio that shows a transition from 2D sketches to 3D organic forms.

Experience with hand-sketching or physical maquettes is a huge plus.

Sustainable Ethics: A genuine commitment to circular design principles and low-impact construction techniques.

Job Responsibilities

Your mission is to design structures that feel like they've grown out of the landscape. You will be responsible for:

Nature-First: Designing bespoke play features like massive timber tangles, sensory willow tunnels, and topographical water play.

Sourcing & Sustainability: Identifying sustainable timber species (like Robinia, Larch, or Oak) and repurposed materials that offer longevity with a low carbon footprint.

Organic Engineering: Developing construction methods that work with the natural irregularities of raw materials rather than forcing them into "perfect" geometric shapes.

Environmental Integration: Ensuring designs promote biodiversity and integrate seamlessly with existing flora and fauna.

How to Apply

Please send us your CV & portfolio. We are particularly interested in seeing examples of how you have handled natural materials in a structural context—show us your joints, your textures, and your understanding of the raw material.
