Description

Job Summary

The Childrens’ Art School are pleased to be able to offer 2 new artist commissions at their new MakerWorld Gallery in Huddersfield Town Centre as part of Arts Council funded project Play|Create|Repeat.

Job Description

About Play | Create | Repeat

The vision for Play|Create|Repeat is to develop a year of inclusive and playful cultural offers for children and young people in Huddersfield town centre. Using an empty shop unit, in an area under development we are currently delivering a free programme of exhibitions, installations and creative workshops, focusing on widening access for young people and building community connections.

The offer currently includes creative family workshops at MakerWorld and a new Youth offer at the Gallery including SkaterWorld, an indoor skatepark led by Strange Impact CIC and a series of pop-up exhibitions created by and for young people and families.

You can see a short film about our Intergalactic Space Jungle exhibition, which took place in Huddersfield in 2023, https://youtu.be/ecsVDjFz0Gc - here.

About the Commissions

The commissions can involve any artform, but should explore creativity in a way that engages children, young people and their grown ups. We are particularly interested in sculptural forms due to how they work in the space. You can design your commission to specifically engage young people aged 13-19, school aged children, under fives and families or a combination of any group.

The space itself is a large, open plan area approx 21x10m with a large shop window, some wall space and lots of floor space. There is access to power at points high on the walls and on 2 central columns. The space also holds a large grand piano.

The commission will include up to 2 weeks in residence in the space to make the artwork/s followed by a week-long exhibition. Each commission artist will be expected to deliver at least one participatory session with children, young people or families during the process.

The workshop can form part of the making of the piece, or be an opportunity for participants to explore your methods and practice.

Job Requirements

Practical Considerations

There are 2 commissions available.

  • The first residency will take place from 8th September 2025 with the exhibition happening 20th - 27th September
  • The second residency will take place from 13th October 2025 with the exhibition from 25th October during October Half Term 2025.

The deadline for the commission is midnight on 6th June 2025, with shortlisting taking place the following week.

Shortlisted artists will have their applications displayed in the Gallery for two weeks 16 - 29 June 2025 for Gallery users to comment on the proposals, during this time you will also have the opportunity to visit the gallery and speak to one, or several of the different groups of participants using the space, about your work and commission proposal. We will cover your expenses to do this as part of the commission process.

The final decision on both commissions will be made in early July, with applicants being notified by the end of the school term (18th July 2025)

Job Responsibilities

The fee for each commission is £1,500, inclusive of planning, design and creation of the final artwork, plus £500 for materials.

The Children's Art School take sustainability and environmental responsibility seriously and we would also like you to demonstrate how sustainability forms a part of your practice and how you might also utilise and recycle materials that are already available in MakerWorld. You can contact us to find out more about the types of materials and equipment we have available.
