Job Summary

Dream Palace is looking for a Production Designer for a paid residency in London that will occur in early 2026. This residency is designed as a collaborative experiment in working from collective dreaming to create new work. Early 2026 £300 per day

Job Description

Dream Palace is an interdisciplinary art project that explores dreaming as a living, creative practice. Drawing inspiration from the memory palace, a method of mapping memory through imagined architecture, the dream becomes a kind of palace: a shifting, interior space where collective cultural memory and imagination are stored, navigated, and reimagined. Dream Palace positions dreaming as a vehicle for accessing shared cultural narratives, and theatre as a living structure through which these narratives are activated and embodied.

Dream Palace is an experimental creative project rooted in collective dreaming, memory, and transformation. This is not a conventional production - it's a living, evolving process shaped by the subconscious, and brought to life through workshops, artistic interpretation, and collaborative development.

We're working with a creative team to translate dream materials into performance, story, and experience-and we're looking for a visionary, detail-oriented, and intuitive Production Designer to help shape the visual and spatial world of the project. This role will involve interpreting dream imagery into environments, aesthetics, and design elements that support the project's immersive, symbolic, and transformative nature.

The Production Designer will lead the design of the project's visual and spatial world, working closely with the director and core creative team to shape a cohesive environment that responds to the fluid, symbolic, and surreal nature of dream material. This role blends conceptual imagination with practical design thinking - a balance of dreaming and doing.

Job Requirements

  • Has experience in production design for theatre, performance, installation, film, or interdisciplinary projects.

  • Is excited by non-linear, conceptual, or experimental creative processes.

  • Can hold space for ambiguity, symbolism, and fluid meaning within design.

  • Has strong visual storytelling instincts and an ability to translate abstract ideas into tangible form.

  • Is comfortable working collaboratively, responsively, and iteratively.

  • Has good organizational and communication skills - and is able to balance vision with practicality.

  • Is curious, open-minded, and attuned to emotional or atmospheric resonance in design.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop a design language that translates abstract and dream-based ideas into physical or digital space (sets, installations, environments, atmospheres).

  • Collaborate with the director, performers, and other designers to ensure alignment between visual design, narrative structure, and performance.

  • Source or design visual references, mood boards, models, sketches, and prototypes.

  • Lead the set design process from concept to execution, including selecting materials, textures, and spatial configurations.

  • Guide the build or installation process (where applicable), working within available budgets and timelines.

  • Adapt designs based on feedback, iterative development, and emerging creative discoveries throughout the process.

  • Contribute to a collaborative, experimental environment where intuition, emotion, and imagination are valued as design tools.
