Description

Job Summary

North Yorkshire Council wishes to commission an artist to create artworks as part of small scale improvements projects at Selby Park, in the centre of Selby, North Yorkshire.

Job Description

The works to Selby Park are one of a number of regeneration schemes within Selby town centre. Selby Park has a long history, and is held in great affection by local residents. It retains some of its Victorian character, but is in need of some key upgrades and improvements, with larger scale projects planned for the future.

The current improvement scheme includes work to the drainage and paths, planting areas (removing older trees, bringing in new planting and revitalising small woodland areas) and providing new recreation facilities including bouldering and new mini golf.

Artist Brief
The artist is required to research and develop a series of proposals linked to the projects planned for Selby Park. This commission will entail working with Parks officers, landscape architects and the regeneration team at NYC. We are particularly interested in elements which are:
- Sensory
- Interactive
- Playful
- Well integrated into the fabric of the park, and use natural materials
- Encourage exploration and investigation into the ecology and nature of the park

The artist is welcome to carry out consultation with the public and park users during this project, although we recognise that the overall budget is not large to allow for a meaningful participation programme. However, if the artist does wish to create any workshops, consultation or participative element to their research, the team will assist where at all possible with contacts and resources.

The budget for this commission is £10,000 which must include all fees, expenses, materials, fabrication and installation.

Job Requirements

We are looking for artists with an interest in and experience of working with natural materials and the landscape. They should also have knowledge of suitable materials and approaches for creating work in public places. Experience of, or strong interest in, interactive or sensory works would also be desirable.

They should also be willing to work collaboratively with the client team to look at creative approaches to this project.

We are looking for the artist to begin this commission during December 2026 and be available to work on it through the early part of 2027 and into Spring.

Job Responsibilities

Research and develop project proposals, including materials, costing, fabrication and installation methods.

Potentially develop and run exploratory workshops and participative elements.

Develop initial proposals into detailed designs for implementation, either self-fabricating the work or researching and indicating suitable fabricators/subcontractors.

Contributing to celebration/activation activity.
