Job Summary

The British Library are looking to recruit a Linux Server Specialist, to join the Infrastructure Team based in Boston Spa near Wetherby.

Job Description

We are looking for someone who has knowledge and experience of deploying and managing Red Hat servers, ideally in a virtual environment.

We are continuing to rebuild our infrastructure, following a major Cyber attack in October 2023.

The Server Specialist will help ensure that our RHEL systems are secure, backed up and able to meet business requirements, operating in a secure, segmented environment.

Job Requirements

The post holder will have:

  • VMware and MS Windows Server and/or Red Hat Linux certification qualification/experience.
  • Substantial and up-to-date knowledge and experience of server and storage hardware and operating system software technologies.
  • Knowledge of capacity planning, IT security and business continuity.
  • Knowledge of the network environment including TCP/IP, Internet technologies.
  • Knowledge and experience of IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) standards.

Job Responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Carry out all routine tasks associated with operating and controlling the installed hardware and software. This may include multiple hardware or software platforms. Use standard procedures and tools to carry out defined system backups, restoring data where necessary. (ITOP301)
  • Respond to simple calls and enquiries from users, specialists and others and takes appropriate action within defined limits of responsibility or area of specialism to deal with processing priorities. Accept escalations and initiates first-level support action, personally resolving the majority of referred problems. (ITOP304)
  • Following agreed procedures, carry out routine configuration/installation and provides sufficient information for reconfiguration of hardware and software. Implement network changes and maintenance routines, utilising the appropriate tools and test equipment. Facilitate and oversee installation, removal, upgrading and repair of equipment. (ITOP306)
