Job Summary

Bursary Programme to support Emerging Makers working in Craft

Job Description

The Somerset Craft Guild is one of the oldest Craft Guilds in the country and has been promoting excellence in craftsmanship and design since 1933. Following the sad closure of the Guild's physical premises in Wells, we are delighted to announce a new and exciting era for craft in the county as Somerset Art Works and The Somerset Craft Guild join together for the future - continuing the vital legacy work of the Somerset Craft Guild, whilst looking forward to foster and encourage the development of a new generation of craftspeople through an exciting upcoming programme of opportunities, bursaries, exhibitions and more.

We're now absolutely delighted to announce the first strand of this new partnership: The Somerset Art Works and Somerset Craft Guild Bursary Programme for Emerging Craftspeople and Makers

Each year, this new bursary will support three emerging makers born, living, or working in Somerset (including BANES and NE Somerset) to further their individual practices and develop high quality work. The successful applicant will receive £1500 towards their personal and professional development. Providing opportunities to work with or be mentored by established makers, create new work, and reach new audiences - all with a core focus on retaining, sustaining and developing high quality craft practice in Somerset.

Alongside supporting the makers through financial uplift, and development and mentoring sessions with an established maker in a relevant field, this year appointed makers will also have the opportunity to join SAW at Bovey Tracey Craft Festival. Where they will develop and deliver a drop-in workshop or demonstration that celebrates their practice and Craft.

  • Showcase a small selection of your current work/samples (this can be current work, or if you are a recent graduate, your degree work) (The festival runs 6 - 8 June, and the workshop/demo's will run 11am - 3pm on one of those days).
  • Document the bursary process, outcomes and any mentoring sessions through social media, blog, or method of your choosing
