Job Summary

A new innovative role in the music department of Manchester Cathedral. By working in the Cathedral and local schools, it aims to create enthusiasm for choral singing and a pathway to being a Cathedral chorister.

Job Description

This pioneering role will support the sustainability of the Cathedral Choir by creating a pathway for children from the earliest ages to become choristers. The Sound Beginnings project will do so primarily by four means:

The post holder will be responsible for creating networks to feed the above activities, including work with Chetham's School of Music, which Cathedral choristers attend; the local Music Hub; Manchester Diocesan Board of Education; and local schools.

The full project is to launched in September 2026. Before that, during the summer term of 2026, the role holder will be expected to begin to establish relevant relationships with local institutions and networks, identify schools with which initially to work, make detailed plans, undertake training for the Small Sounds project, and establish base-line metrics for reviewing the effectiveness of the various elements of the role. The role holder will become immediately responsible for the Junior Singers and the organisation of BACFADs.

Job Requirements

These include:

a qualification in music or equivalent experience;

a knowledge of teaching singing and choral direction;

sufficient profiency playing a keyboard for choral accompaniment;

a commitment to the sacred choral tradition;

an ability to work with children and able to inspire and nurture musical potential in young people;

the ability to present and perform to large audiences and small groups;

administrative and leadership skills.

Job Responsibilities

These include

to develop links with local primary schools, including church schools, supporting the development of singing skills. It is expected that the role holder will work with four to six schools in the first academic year, delivering in liaison with schools either whole-class curriculum support or running extra-curricular choirs.

to encourage school choirs to join together in concerts at the Cathedral, with input from the choristers in order to make links.

As part of working with school, to offer workshops at Cathedral with choristers.

to act as Director of the Cathedral Junior Singers;

to administer and either lead or assist (depending upon post holder's skills) at Small Sound sessions.

to advise on, assist and administer the delivery of at least two BACFAD events per term.
