Bristol Old Vic is seeking to recruit a Sound No.1 to join our busy Production Team for the production of How To Win Against History, at all times remaining responsible for the operation and safe use of the theatre’s technical sound equipment.

We are looking for an experienced Sound no.1 for How to Win Against History, a new musical from Bristol Old Vic and Francesca Moody Productions.

Dates: Monday 9th June - Sunday 24th August 2025.

  • Monday 19 May - Rehearsals Begin (London)
  • Monday 9 June - Rehearsals Begin (Bristol) Sound No.1 to join
  • Wednesday 11 or Thursday 12 June 2025 - Fit Up Begins
  • Saturday 13 June 2025 - Tech Begins
  • Thursday 19 June 2025 - Preview 1
  • Friday 20 June 2025 - Preview 2
  • Saturday 21 June 2025 - Preview 3
  • Monday 23 June 2025 - Preview 4
  • Tuesday 24 June 2025 - Preview 5
  • Wednesday 25 June 2025 - Press night
  • Saturday 12 July 2025 - Final Performance and Get Out
  • w/c 14 July - Holiday Week
  • w/c 21 July: Tech/Performances Norwich
  • 27 July: Travel to Edinburgh
  • 28 July: Day Off
  • 29 July: Tech (TBC)
  • 31 July: Preview 1
  • 24th August: Final Performance

Location: Rehearsals in London & Bristol. Performances in Bristol Norwich & Edinburgh.

Contract: Full time, fixed term.

Job Requirements

Essential Qualities:

  • Minimum 3+ years in the role of Sound No.1 at a similar professional scale.
  • Previous musical experience

Desirable Qualities:

  • Previous new musical experience.
  • Touring experience.

Personal attributes: Proven experiences as a Sound No.1. An excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills.The ability to work calmly under pressure. Exemplary time management and organisational skills. A positive, committed and solution-focused attitude.

Job Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the Sound No.1 will include those usually expected of a professional at a regional producing theatre, including but not limited to:

  • Ensuring the sound design as created is protected and recreated for all performances
  • Programming the desk before and during technical rehearsals
  • Operating the sound desk for all rehearsals and performances
  • Managing the sound no2 for all rehearsal and performance activity
