HMDT Music seeks an experienced Stage Director to join its I Can Sing! Music Theatre team for its 2025-26 season. I Can Sing! is part of HMDT Music’s Saturday Programme, which enriches the lives of young people through high quality, exciting music making opportunities.

Job Description

I Can Sing! offers participants the opportunity to experience the joy of music theatre performance, with sessions in dance, drama/stagecraft and singing, as well as sessions that combine all these disciplines together. Repertoire includes HMDT Music's own commissions as well as music from the Broadway tradition.

The Stage Director's role is to stage and rehearse music theatre and/or children's opera excerpts and scenes to classes of children ages 7-15, leading to end of term showings and a large-scale end of year performance with all the ICS! groups working together. The Director will be expected to collaborate with the HMDT Music's Conductor/Creative Director and the I Can Sing! Choreographer and Pianists to plan the sessions for all groups. You should have experience of and enjoy working with, young people in a music theatre or opera context.

The role will involve working on Saturdays from 09:00 to 14:15 for 10 weeks per term for the 2025-26 Academic year from 20 September 2025 to 11 July 2026 and is renewable each academic year.

Fee: Approximately £1,575.00 per term (on a self-employed basis).

Start date: 20 September 2025

Closing date for applications is 10:00 Tuesday 10 June

Online interviews will be held the week of 16 June

Shortlisted candidates may be required to do an audition with students of the I Can Sing! on 21 or 28 June.

The full I Can Sing! company are performing We'll Meet Again, a compilation of HMDT Music's commissions commemorating VE as part of its 20th Anniversary celebrations, on 17 May at 14:30 at our home in Bridge Academy (E2 8BA). If available, interested candidates would be welcome to attend the performance. There is no obligation for this, and attendance will not affect any part of the application process.
