Job Summary

The Stage Manager is an important member of the Production team and works closely with the Head of Production and Creative team to realise the quality of production and performance demanded by the Company’s high standards.

Job Description

The SM will cover community rehearsals until the Deputy Stage Manager (DSM) starts later in the process. The Stage Manager is responsible for the freelance Stage Management team, Chaperones and volunteers as well as sourcing props.

Terms and Conditions

This is freelance, fixed term contract for services which requires self-employed status.

Start date: Tuesday 22 April 2025

Finish date: Wednesday 06 August 2025

Fee: £535 per week (43 hour week, overtime as per Equity agreement). Subsistence £235 per week

Hours of work: 43 per week over six days, except in designated production weeks when based on a 46 hour week, with evening, weekend or bank holiday work as required.

Key Responsibilities

To work closely with the Director, Designer and other members of the creative team to facilitate the production

To work alongside the Community co-ordinator in scheduling community rehearsals

To be on the book, working on calls and notes in community rehearsals until DSM starts later in the process

To support in the running of various community volunteer teams

To support the Company Manager in scheduling chaperones in rehearsals

To supervise the purchasing, finding or making of props, furniture and other items as may be required by the show

To ensure the smooth and efficient running of all rehearsals and technical rehearsals in conjunction with the Head of Production and other members of production staff

To be responsible for ensuring the ongoing artistic integrity of York Theatre Royal produced work during a run, in absence of the director, communicating any changes to the show director and management of the Theatre as required

To ensure that proper communications are maintained with other departments of York Theatre Royal especially with regard to communication of information from rehearsals and the maintenance of the production in performance

Job Requirements

Key Activities

To organise the work of the department in an efficient and cost-effective manner

To work within budgets as discussed and agreed with the Head of Production

To schedule the hours for all stage management, performers and chaperones and ensure that overtime, budget limits and relevant agreements are adhered to.

To ensure all schedules are designed to keep Production Department overtime to a minimum, especially during technical rehearsals - in liaison with the Company Manager

To process all Equity timesheets and promptly submit information to Company Manager for payroll

To report through rehearsal notes anything relevant for the risk assessment for the HoP to produce the show risk assessment.

To be instrumental in maintaining a good working atmosphere for performers, volunteers and directors during rehearsal periods and performances

To be the Equity point of contact for YTR

Job Responsibilities

To co-ordinate with the Communications team on all matters regarding their requirements of the acting company and creative team

To co-ordinate touch tours and backstage tours for in-house productions as required

To attend production meetings

To cover roles of other members of the stage management team as required

To ensure the storage and preparation of food for a production is to a high standard & follows Food Hygiene regulations

To supervise students on work placements within the Stage Management department, and Production department as required by the Head of Production / Company Manager

Essential Specification

At least 2 years' experience as a SM/CSM

Excellent organisational and communication skills

An excellent team player

A positive and motivated individual

Enthusiastic, committed and passionate about the Arts

The ability to work to tight deadlines and prioritise work

Ability to work evenings / weekends

Desirable

A full clean driving licence

DBS checked

First Aid training
