This is an exciting opportunity to join the Stage department working in a busy producing theatre. As part of the Stage Team you will be assisting in installing scenery, maintenance and operating of stage equipment and effects both outside and during performances.

The Stage Department is integrated into the wider production process from the white card: working alongside production management and the workshop team on stage effects, logistics and planning. We ensure that digital technology and sustainability are at the heart of every project. This is an opportunity to see and be a part of the creation of productions.

At the Rep, we have 3 venues all in one building, creating and showing a variety of productions from plays to dance to musicals.

Pay: £25,779 per annum (pay award pending)
Hours: 2028 hours per year (equivalent to 39 hours a week). Evening and weekend work will be required.
Holiday: 28 days per year including bank holidays
Pension: Contributory staff pension, 5% employee and 3% employer

Job Requirements

Key skills and experience for this role include;

  • Suitable experience of working on a stage.
  • Knowledge and experience of operating a counterweight fly system.
  • Experience, knowledge and understanding of the theatrical technical industry and in particular technical products, equipment and systems.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Great problem solver
  • Ability to be an integral part of a team but also to use initiative and work independently.
  • Knowledge of current Health and Safety guidance and practice and practical implementation
  • Desire to lead and motivate a team.
  • Ability to work under pressure while managing time effectively and meeting deadlines.
  • Basic carpentry and metal working skills.
  • Ability to and experience of working at height.
  • Ability to work from scale drawings

Job Responsibilities

The role main duties and responsibilities of the role are:

  • To be an active member of the Stage Department working on New Rep Productions.
  • Install and operate technical equipment including the counterweight flying system for Birmingham Rep productions, visiting companies, conferences, hires and events as required
  • Lead on specific tasks & projects as required by the Head of Department and Technical Manager.
  • To help maintain and run performances, ensuring the productions maintain the highest standard of delivery.
  • To liaise with the creative teams at all key stages of the design and construction of each production.
  • Liaise with other technical staff and the UVB Team regarding the requirements for conferences and hires.
  • To work to design and installation deadlines as per production and technical schedules set by the Technical Manager and Production Manager.
  • Maintain all technical equipment both on a day-to-day and in the formalised scheduled programme.
