Job Summary

Seeking an experienced Technician to join our Summer Sizzle youth theatre programme on a short-term freelance contract. Working alongside talented young people, you will support the technical development of two brand-new, 45-minute devised productions created by participants aged 8–11 and 12–19.

Job Description

You will join the project on the final day of Week One to watch the first rough runs of both productions and begin planning the technical requirements.
During Week Two, you will collaborate with our young people (aged 12-19) to develop, programme and operate the technical elements of the performances, mentoring participants throughout the process. This will include creating a lighting design, refining sound designs and, where appropriate, incorporating projection, ready for the final performances on 22nd August.
We are looking for someone who is not only technically skilled, but also enjoys working creatively with young people and can foster a supportive, collaborative environment.

Dates:
14th August - 9:00am-6:00pm
17th-20th August - 9:00am-6:00pm
21st-22nd August - 1:30pm-9:30pm

Total: 7 days
Fee
ÂŁ1,400.00 (inclusive of VAT and National Insurance contributions)
Equivalent to ÂŁ200 per day for 7 days.

Job Requirements

Applicants should:
Have substantial experience programming theatrical lighting desks and designing sound for live performance.
Have experience working with young people aged 12-19 in a technical theatre setting.
Be confident operating technical equipment during live performances.
Have experience using projection within theatre productions (desirable).
Be reliable, approachable and supportive, with excellent communication skills.
Hold a current DBS certificate, or be willing to undergo a DBS check and safeguarding training.
Be registered as self-employed and able to invoice for freelance work.

Job Responsibilities

Patch, programme and operate lighting design for 2 brand new 45 minute shows, devised by young people (Zero 88 Orb Lighting Desk). Brush up sound designs that will be created by assistants, in the rehearsal rooms. The full extent of what is required is unknown, given the devised nature of these shows.

Future Opportunities
We currently have a grant application in progress which, if successful, could lead to further and more regular freelance opportunities during 2027. We are therefore keen to build a longer-term working relationship with the right candidate.
