Job Summary

We’re looking for 4 artist-practitioners to support lead artists to deliver meaningful residencies with and for communities in Sherburn, from January – August 2025.

Job Description

This call out is for practitioners, who may be early career or emerging in their practice. Practitioners should have some experience (which can be transferable) of working with children, young people and/ or adults and of inclusive practice. They will support and work closely Lead Artists, stakeholders and participants over the life of the residency. They'll also work with a Creative Engagement Producer and our Creative Programme Lead. Working together with our partnership and communities in Sherburn, we'll make exciting things happen, together.

4 Residencies in Sherburn will take place simultaneously, with artists working directly with communities to engage participants in their art form. The residencies will build to and include co-creating work with participants which explores stories relevant to Sherburn and its people. Co-created work will be presented at an outdoor arts festival in Sherburn, on either Saturday 16 or Sunday 17 August 2025.

Art Forms

We are open to working with a range of arts forms and genres. We have published a call out for Lead artists working in the following disciplines:

The work we co-create together must be produced to be presented in an outdoor, greenfield setting. This includes building green and ecologically responsive practices into our processes, and care will be taken to not harm or endanger any wildlife or nature.

Artists will need an understanding of what it means to make work for outdoor settings and/or site specific settings.

Job Requirements

  • Our support Practitioner roles are offered on a self-employed (freelance) basis and will run from approximately January 2025 -end of August 2025
  • The fee and model is based on artists delivering the equivalent of a half day per week, including during school holidays. We do understand that there will be some weeks artists may not be available - however they should be available once a week (dates and time to be agreed) for the majority of the project, with weeks they may be away communicated and agreed in advance, including agreed substitutes.
  • The role will require working weekly in Sherburn In Elmet.
  • Support Practitioners must be available for their weekly sessions throughout late July and August, during the build up to our festival.
  • Support Practitioners must be available on 16 and 17 August 2025.
  • The total fee for this work is £2,880.This fee is based on recommended rates for the equivalent of half a day per week, from January - August 2025.

Job Responsibilities

    • This contract will be on a fixed fee basis, to deliver agreed outputs.
  • Fees are exclusive of VAT and include all travel and expenses.
  1. Contract

The Practitioner will be appointed on a contract agreement, on a self-employed (freelance) basis. They will be responsible for their own tax and National Insurance contributions. This brief will form part of the contract.

  1. Management and Working Relationships

The Practitioners will be managed by a Creative Engagement Producer, who will be working specifically on the Sherburn programme. Overall management of the producer and the residencies will be undertaken by The Now Then! Creative Programme Lead, who works for North Yorkshire Council and oversees the full programme.

  1. Insurances

The practitoner is required to hold Public Liability insurance to the value of £5million and Public Indemnity Insurance where relevant.

  1. DBS

Artists should have, or be willing to undergo, an Enhanced DBS check.
