The Barbican Music department is looking for a highly motivated, dynamic and experienced Technical Manager (Music) to lead and inspire the technical team to deliver world-class events in the Concert Hall and associated areas, onsite and offsite.

Working within the Technical Management Team, the Technical Manager (Music) will ensure that all music events and associated performances in the Concert Hall, foyers and ancillary areas at the Barbican receive consistent, high-standard technical advancement and support. The post holder will manage and schedule an experienced technical team of Technicians and Supervisors to deliver the technical aspirations of a diverse and dynamic music programme.

This role requires the post holder to manage a large administrative and organisational workload, work closely and collaboratively with the Centre's Business Events team, Creative Collaborations team, and all other Barbican departments and to represent the Music department by attending internal management and external production meetings.

The post holder will be expected to multi-task, lead and develop a team, work under pressure; excellent interpersonal skills are essential. Weekend and evening work is required on occasions for this role.

Job Requirements

  • Strong knowledge and interest in arts, classical and contemporary music, and commercial presentations; degree-level or equivalent technical experience
  • High-level technical expertise in live disciplines: lighting, sound, AV, and video, with relevant qualifications or experience
  • Extensive understanding of the music industry and creative processes of music-making
  • Experience with live-streamed and recorded events; high computer proficiency
  • Good knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and safe working practices
  • Proven managerial experience in multi-disciplinary arts venues, liaising with artists, clients and producers
  • Skilled in complex rota management, staff scheduling, and freelancer bookings
  • Strong negotiation skills and ability to drive change for successful events
  • Experienced in managing and motivating technical teams across disciplines
  • Competent in budget management for performances and equipment; project management desirable.

Job Responsibilities

  • Report to Senior Technical Manager and collaborate with Technical Managers to deliver 250+ world-class events annually.
  • Lead pre-planning and organization of Music Department events; oversee equipment hire and freelancer bookings.
  • Attend production meetings to negotiate sound, lighting, staging, and AV requirements for complex events.
  • Line-manage technical staff, develop roles, and maintain team effectiveness.
  • Create and manage rotas ensuring compliance with working time directives and staff requests.
  • Work collaboratively across technical teams to optimize resources and technical solutions.
  • Stay current with AV, sound, lighting, and staging technologies to maintain high standards.
  • Build strong relationships with artists, producers, and partners including LSO, BBCSO, and commercial clients.
  • Support feasibility studies, capital projects, and equipment acquisitions; produce technical reports.
  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety regulations, promote equality and safe working
