The Technical Manager will lead the technical delivery of the production from the beginning of the technical/rehearsal period through to the end of the tour. Working closely with The Paper Birds' creative team, Stage Manager, Technical ASM, venue technical teams and touring company, the Technical Manager will ensure that the production is delivered consistently, safely and efficiently across a range of venues. The role will suit an experienced theatre technician/technical manager who is comfortable taking responsibility for a touring production while also being an active, practical member of the touring team. Job Description
The Paper Birds work in line with ITC Fair Work Agreements. Our budget is based on the current 2026/27 ITC/Bectu rates, with a benchmark of £750 per week. The successful applicant will receive a contract setting out the agreed grade, working hours, travel, holiday pay, accommodation and other applicable terms and conditions.
Where the role requires relocation or overnight stays, applicable travel, accommodation and subsistence arrangements will be provided in line with the relevant agreement. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.Job Requirements
Experience working with sound, lighting and projection.
Has experience of touring theatre.
Is confident managing get-ins, get-outs and technical rehearsals.
Is comfortable liaising with venue technical departments and touring personnel.
Has strong practical theatre technical skills.
Is organised and able to manage competing priorities.
Can work calmly and effectively under pressure.
Has a strong understanding of theatre health and safety.
Is a clear communicator and supportive team member.
Is comfortable working in a collaborative and fast-moving environment.

Working with the creative team to realise the technical requirements of the production.
Coordinating technical rehearsals, get-ins, get-outs and fit-ups.
Covering the operation of live captions and audience interaction systems during the performances in the absence of the Assistant Stage Manager/Captioner.
Liaising with receiving venues and their technical departments in a timely manner to advance production information.
Ensuring the production is safely and consistently installed in each venue.
Maintaining technical documentation, including plans, schedules, equipment lists and relevant risk assessments.
During the load in and fit up, leading on the coordination of all technical elements such as relight, refocusing projectors.
Managing and maintaining the touring technical equipment and production resources.Useful Links
