40 hours per week, Monday to Friday to be worked flexibly according to the needs of the Ryan Theatre, including evenings and weekends.

The site: Harrow School is situated in Harrow on the Hill in north-west London and is one of the best-known schools in the world. Around 835 boys aged 13 to 18 study at Harrow and live in the school's 12 boarding Houses. The School's Ryan Theatre seats over 300 people and is equipped to industry standards, staging an ambitious and diverse range of productions consistently drawing on the creativity and skill of our talented theatre production staff team. Harrow has a national reputation for its drama programme, and many former pupils have progressed to pursue careers in the theatre and performance industries.

The role: The Theatre Manager will play a central role in managing the planning, coordination and technical delivery of the busy theatre programme. It's an excellent opportunity to develop a wide range of disciplines; from managing all production requirements including equipment, theatre spaces and health and safety, to line managing production support staff and contractors, as well as overseeing maintenance, refurbishments and upgrades. You will also support the education and supervision of pupils developing their drama skills and collaborate with internal departments, suppliers and external organisations.

Job Requirements

This role will suit a candidate with a proven track record of working in a theatre venue at managerial level on artistic events, with significant experience in theatre production and a high level of knowledge of sound and technical equipment. You will relish the opportunity to create a supportive and stretching environment for your team and students, to maximise the potential of what they can achieve and build on the school's impressive reputation for ground-breaking school drama productions.

Using your thorough understanding of the theatre's creative and technical processes, you will apply your pragmatic approach and sound judgment to recommend ways of working that are practical, minimise risk and manage finances/resources effectively. Your strong written and verbal communication skills, tactful, approachable manner and ability to positively influence others will enable you to build strong professional relationships throughout the school at all levels of seniority.

Production and project delivery

  • Oversee the day-to-day scheduling of theatre spaces, ensuring teaching, rehearsals, and production needs are consistently met.
  • Work with the Director of Drama to plan and ma nage capital expenditure, including bids, approvals, purchasing, and liaising with the finance team.

Leadership and Line Management

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the Ryan Theatre.
  • Line manage permanent and freelance theatre staff, nurturing, allocating workload, supporting and developing their work.

Collaboration and Liaison

  • Working closely with Harrow School Enterprises Ltd, engage with external organisations and internal departments to manage community or commercial use of the Ryan Theatre.
  • Act as the main point of contact between the School and the Old Harrovian Players (the alumni theatre group), and collaborate with the Harrow Association to facilitate alumni involvement in events and opportunities.
