We are Freewheelers, a theatre company of disabled people and an Arts Council England NPO. We are looking for a filmmaker to work with our company members and partner, On The Record, to create a 5-10 minute film as part of a new disability history project. The film should foreground the voices and views of the project participants. As well as being a standalone product, the film will be used as part of an exhibition about the project and the history of disabled people in Surrey, then and now, which will be shown in Surrey and London. 'Us & Them' is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) and delivered in partnership with On The Record, photographer Emma Brown, Surrey History Centre and Kings College London. It is a project for and by creative, disabled people, giving us a voice to interpret and share our history. It draws on records and medical portraits of patients of Surrey's mental health hospitals, 1850s-1920s. You should be an experienced film-maker, who has worked collaboratively with community participants and partner organisations to create imaginative, impactful films. To create the film, you will be working with On the Record and eight members of the Freewheelers Media Group. Us & Them will run for approximately 18 months and filming will take place from mid November 2025 to March 2026. The opening exhibition will run from September to October 2026 at Horton Arts, Epsom before moving to the Curiosity Cabinet in The Strand, London until March 2027. The budget for the filmmaker is £7,980 including VAT and expense. The deadline for receipt of proposals is 12:00 noon, Monday 22 September. Freewheelers Theatre (an Arts Council NPO) seeks an experienced, collaborative filmmaker to create a 5-10 min film for Us & Them, a new disability history project funded by NLHF. The role involves working closely with Freewheelers' Media Group and partners (On The Record, Surrey History Centre, KCL, Emma Brown) to co-produce the film: approx. 12 days of filming (Nov 2025-Mar 2026) in Surrey; supporting disabled artists in filming/interviews; shaping and editing collaboratively; and providing full filming/audio kit (DSLR, lavalier mics, boom, overhead rig). Applicants must have 5+ years' AV filmmaking experience, strong community co-production skills (ideally with disabled groups), and patience, creativity, and inclusivity. Work collaboratively with Freewheelers' disabled artists, On The Record, and partners to co-create a 5-10 minute film for Us & Them, a disability history project. Responsibilities include capturing workshops, interviews, and portrait sessions (approx. 12 filming days, Nov 2025-Mar 2026); guiding and supporting participants with camera use and filmmaking skills; shaping the film's visual style in alignment with the exhibition; and editing with input from Freewheelers and partners. Provide and operate appropriate kit (DSLR, wireless lav mics, boom mic, multi-input audio). Ensure accessible, high-quality filming with sensitivity to participants' needs.
