Job Summary

Would you like to work for the charity that cares for hundreds of historic sites in every corner of England? We are looking for a Visitor Assistant to join us at Apsley House & Wellington Arch working 14 hours per week.

Job Description

No history background? No problem. What is important to us is a passion for people and excellent customer service. You will enjoy working with others as part of a team and understand what makes excellent customer service to deliver an engaging visitor experience to a diverse audience.

Heritage is for everybody, and we are here for heritage.

Heritage lives in places and people, memories and stories, artefacts and traditions. It can connect us all to the past, and to each other. It can make us happier, strengthen every community, and help shape society for the better. Everybody should be able to enjoy the benefits it brings. That's why, as a charity, we care for over a million objects and hundreds of historic sites in every part of England, from international icons to local treasures. And it's why we open them up, share their stories and find new ways for everybody to enjoy, learn, play and create.

Apsley House, home of the first Duke of Wellington and his descendants, stands right in the heart of London at Hyde Park Corner and has changed very little since his great victory at Waterloo in 1815.

By joining us as an Apsley House Visitor Assistant, you will be part of an amazing team of employees and volunteers, ensuring visitors have a great time from the moment they arrive until they say goodbye. Through your recommendations, you will help personalise their visit - this could include talking about the benefits of English Heritage membership or recommending things to see and do on site. You will also contribute to making sure your site is accessible, safe and well presented at all times. It is a varied role - some days will be busy from start to finish and others quieter, especially on the wetter days!

Job Requirements

Essential:

  1. Enthusiasm to deliver great visitor experiences across all stages of a customer's visit.
  2. A people person, who is able to engage in a positive way with people from all backgrounds.
  3. A confident communicator with both individuals and groups, and confident to deal with visitor feedback with site training and support.
  4. Willingness to follow site procedures and priorities, supporting good presentation standards across all areas of the site.
  5. Flexible with a positive attitude, enjoys working as part of a varied team and able to adapt from one day to the next.
  6. Capable of understanding financial targets and carrying out basic money-handling and cashiering duties.
  7. Comfortable using basic technology (such as EPOS systems and tills, touch-screens and mobile devices).

Desirable:

  1. Some paid or voluntary experience of working directly with the public in a comparable environment such as a visitor attraction, a heritage environment like a museum, or with the retail/charity sectors.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Delivering a warm welcome to all visitors you meet at site.
  2. Proactively meet and exceed the needs of visitors, carefully listening to their interests and motivations for visiting.
  3. Be aware of your financial targets and contribute to the site's performance by working across membership and ticket sales, donations, guidebook and retail as well as any further income streams that support the charity.
  4. Actively look out for opportunities to sell, and demonstrate excellent brand standards in line with English Heritage income priorities, visitor trends and visual guidelines.
  5. Ensure a good level of presentation care and attention by helping to keep the site tidy and safe for everyone to enjoy. This includes sweeping, emptying bins and cleaning toilets.
  6. Follow all relevant operating procedures, policies and training information, making sure site issues are reported correctly, cash, data and property are safeguarded, and good standards of presentation are maintained at all times.
