Are you an artist inspired by community storytelling and cultural heritage? Bradford Cathedral is looking for a Visual Artist to co-create a tapestry that reflects the spirit and history of Bradford's communities. This significant piece will integrate stories from diverse groups and blend art with heritage, leaving a legacy for generations to come.

Collaborate with the Cathedral's Stitchers Group and volunteers, lead public participation events, and engage creatively with collected narratives. Partner with a sound artist and other contributors to create an integrated, meaningful artwork that tells Bradford's story.

Job Requirements

  • Creatively connect Bradford's rich heritage with its current community through story and art.
  • Produce a heritage artwork that will outlast 2025, speaking to future generations.
  • Ensure high-quality engagement with the public and various groups accessing the Cathedral, culminating in the production of the tapestry.

The role equates to approximately 40 hours at £32/hour.

Job Responsibilities

  • Create designs for a co-produced tapestry reflecting Bradford's cultural heritage and community stories.
  • Oversee embroidery sessions with the Stitchers Group and other volunteer embroiders to deliver the final artwork with designs inspired by collected stories.
  • Facilitate public participation in the tapestry project, including inviting individuals to contribute stories and weave parts of the artwork.
  • Support experiential events and educational activities linked to the project, in collaboration with the Cathedral's Education and Visitors team.
  • Research and integrate oral and written narratives into the visual artwork.
  • Work with West Riding Stone Carvers to transfer selected phrases and images onto loom weights.
  • Coordinate with the project manager, project panel, and other artists, including a sound artist producing an accompanying piece.
  • Ensure all project activities adhere to the Cathedral's safeguarding policies and procedures.
