Description

Job Summary

We are seeking composers who are passionate about working with young people and facilitating their creative ideas. Join a dynamic, reflective and committed cohort of composers working with students, teachers and musicians to transform how composition is taught in secondary schools.

Job Description

WeCompose is our transformative in-schools composition project: a collaboration between teachers, professional composers, outstanding ensembles and leading music educators. Developing high quality resources and approaches, we work directly in schools in South Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, the East Riding of Yorkshire as well as in East London, Milton Keynes and the Solent Area (Portsmouth, Southampton, Isle of Wight). Our first three years have reached over 1620 students, and in 2025/2026, we aim to reach 2,460 young people across the country.

We are seeking professional composers at a range of stages of postgraduate career. This is a project which is particularly focussed on opening up composition opportunities for children and young people who may have limited access to music and music education. Over the course of 25/26, composers will collaborate with class teachers and develop relationships with KS3 and/or KS4 classes that encompass a variety of teaching methods/ softwares/ challenges. Composers will be matched with 3-9 schools (depending on preference) and will visit classrooms roughly once a month from November 2026, leading group activities and delivering differentiated feedback to students working at different levels. Composers will find appropriate creative solutions to composition-based challenges that arise for individual students and empower young people to make use of different composition techniques. From March 2026, composers will ensure student scores are fit-for-purpose ahead of composition workshops with a professional ensemble (April 2026 onwards), where students will hear their pieces for the first time. Composers will co-lead these workshops and shape musical decision making with the students.

Composers will attend ongoing professional development as pertains to this role.

Work is paid at a rate of £150 per day plus travel expenses.
