WMS (Wandsworth Mediation Service) is expanding its pool of workshop facilitators for secondary school projects. Selected candidates will be contacted for interviews in May 2025.

Job Description

The role: WMS is looking for experienced and creative freelance facilitators/ workshop leaders to deliver 8-session behaviour interventions in secondary schools and PRUs. Our intervention is targeted at young people who have difficulties managing their reactions in conflict situations and/or are at risk of exclusion. Successful candidates must have experience delivering workshops and facilitated training to young people with various learning, emotional and behavioural needs; and will be trained to lead highly interactive, games-based workshops across different schools.

Job title: Freelance Workshop Facilitator for projects in secondary schools and Pupil Referral Units
Location: Predominantly SW London / South England (varies by project)
Job type: Project-based self-employed contractor, projects are delivered during school days in term time.
Contractor rate: ranges between £1600-£2200 per project, depending on grant funding. Each project will take place over 7-9 non-consecutive days spread across 2-3 months, usually on a weekly basis and always during school hours and in term time. Working days will range between 3-7 hours depending on the session.
Commitment: Projects are ad hoc and are dependent on (a) WMS receiving grant funding and (b) schools being willing to have the programme (c) agreeing dates with co-trainers and schools. Candidates must be able to commit to up to 3 projects per year and we would liaise with you over project dates in advance of each project.

Deadlines:
Applications close on 2 May 2025.
You will be informed by 8 May 2025 if you are selected for interview.
Interviews will take place in late May 2025, and we will ask you to prepare and deliver a game suitable to KS3-4 students.
You will be informed if you have been selected by 29 May 2025.
All trainers must attend two free (and unpaid) induction training sessions in June 2025 at St. Marks' Church, Battersea Rise, London SW11 1EJ.

Job Requirements

Person Specification - Essential:
Facilitation and workshop experience: at least 2 years' experience teaching or leading interactive workshops for young people, ideally those who struggle in mainstream settings.
Strong behaviour management skills: able to hold the room, manage challenging behaviour positively, and set clear boundaries while keeping sessions fun and engaging.
Confident and flexible facilitator: who can keep energy levels high, respond to non-verbal cues and think on their feet, adapting on the spot if an activity isn't landing.
Empathetic but clear communicator: able to build trust and rapport, using affirmation and encouragement without being patronising.
Resilient: emotionally grounded, able to stay calm, neutral and non-reactive in high-pressure situations.

Desirable:
Higher-level qualification in teaching, youth work or a related field (e.g. Youth Work, Cert Ed, PGCE).
Safeguarding training
Mediation, counselling, or youth mentoring experience.

Job Responsibilities

Key responsibilities:
Together with a co-facilitator, lead games-based workshops for KS3-4 children in secondary schools and PRUs, supported by WMS staff.
Flexibly use a variety of activities to teach conflict resolution, effective communication and emotional regulation skills.
Liaise with WMS staff and school contacts to ensure all project outcomes are met.

Project schedule:
How each programme is delivered will depend on the timetables/availability of each secondary school and/or PRU, but typically will entail:
Leading with an assistant or co-facilitator
Pre-training check-in session(s) with young people in small groups.
Six 1.5-hour sessions, usually delivered weekly. Students will be divided in two groups of no more than 10, with each group having separate sessions.
Usually two different groups per day.
Post-training check-in session(s) with young people in small groups
