Job Title: Youth Theatre Director (Freelance)

Location: Ludlow Assembly Rooms, 1 Mill Street, Ludlow, SY8 1AZ

Job Type: Part-time

Salary: £115 per week (5pm - 7.45pm), including planning

Job Summary

We are seeking a confident and creative facilitator to be our new Youth Theatre Director. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in directing theatre and experience of working with young people. This freelance role involves planning, directing, and leading regular youth theatre activities and productions for young people in Ludlow aged 11 - 18, as well as working closely with an Assistant Youth Theatre Director.

About Pentabus Youth Theatre

Pentabus Youth Theatre is a new opportunity for young people aged 11 - 18 to join a cohort of likeminded peers and develop skills in acting and theatre-making. Young people will attend regular, term-time youth theatre sessions and performance events, as well as benefit from support and mentoring from professional facilitators, directors and associates. Young people will work together to develop scripted pieces of theatre from established texts, learn how to devise, and showcase their work publicly at Ludlow Assembly Rooms and other venues across the region.

From 10th September 2025, youth theatre sessions will run on Wednesdays during term-time at Ludlow Assembly Rooms for two age groups, as follows:

  • 5.00pm - 6.15pm for ages 11 - 14
  • 6.30pm - 7.45pm for ages 15 - 18

Job Requirements

(Essential)

  • A degree and/or 3 years professional experience in theatre, drama, education or a related field.
  • Proven experience in theatre production and directing, particularly with young people.
  • Strong, engaging leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate young people.
  • Knowledge of current drama / theatre curriculum and syllabus, child development and educational practices.
  • Awareness of national initiatives, research and policies relating to youth theatre.
  • Familiarity and awareness of best practice approaches to safeguarding.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required for performances or events relating to agreed Youth Theatre activity.
  • A current DBS check.

(Desirable)

  • Experience of mentoring or supporting young people and/or more junior colleagues.
  • Experience in stage management and technical theatre.
  • First Aid certification.
  • A background in drama therapy or similar fields.

Job Responsibilities

Session planning: Design and lead engaging youth theatre workshops for young people aged 11 - 14 and 15 - 18, with workshops tailored to various skill levels.

Directing: Lead and direct youth theatre productions, whilst playing a key role in ensuring high-quality performances and a positive and safe experience for all participants.

Mentorship: Provide guidance and support to young actors, helping them develop their skills and confidence.

Collaboration: Work closely with other staff members including the Head of Engagement and Artistic Director at Pentabus, and Assistant Youth Theatre Director to enhance the Pentabus Youth Theatre offer.

Administration: Liaise regularly with the Head of Engagement to discuss and arrange event and activity logistics relating to Youth Theatre.

Safeguarding: Ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all participants, adhering to Pentabus' safeguarding policies and procedures.
